During its 91st Annual Conference this weekend at the Salem Convention Center, the League of Oregon Cities presented its 2016 Helen and Alan Berg Good Governance award to the city of Dallas. The award recognized the city for its Citizen Engagement Initiative. Created in 1998, the Good Governance award honors city programs that connect citizens within a community. In 2010, it was renamed in honor of the late Mr. and Mrs. Berg, former mayors of Corvallis and presidents of the League of Oregon Cities.

The city of Dallas citizen initiative includes several programs designed to engage community
members. First, the city established an annual City Department Expo, where community
members visit representatives from each city department to gain a unique understanding of what a city does. Second, the city’s new “Tuesdays on the Square” events provide residents a better sense of place and a new way to interact with their downtown on an otherwise quiet evening in Dallas. The city has also launched a “Take a Closer Look at Dallas” campaign, which includes brochures that highlight everything from businesses to tourist activities. Finally, the city started a Dallas Citizens’ Academy, a free training in which elected officials and city staff showcased the functions of city government.
